Since the first Iron Man movie back in 2008, Marvel has been dominating the film industry with huge blockbuster films that generate millions of dollars. Superhero movies are the norm of modern cinema and over the next 5 to 6 years, about 30 films will be of this genre — even Lego Batman is getting his own movie. Marvel has been dominating the box office for years, but that might not be the case for long. The DC universe is unraveling their biggest movie next year, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, followed by the Suicide Squad. Although the DC universe has already begun with the “Man of Steel”, a lot of pressure lies on the Warner Bros. studios as well as the Batman v Superman film as they will be the deciding factors on the future of the franchise as well as the “first impression” of the Justice League on the big screen. One thing that is certain about the upcoming DC film is that it will most likely be a huge profit for the Warner Bros. studios as they are putting the two biggest superheroes in history on the same screen, and that is why Marvel should be worried. Although the Marvel universe is already set up quite efficiently, their characters are not as well known as the ones in the DC universe (i.e. Flash, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman). Everyone knows Batman and Superman even without any big blockbuster movies, however, that may not be the case with heroes like Thor or Captain America. Sure, now these Marvel characters are very prominent and popular because of their presence in Hollywood, but they probably would not have been as established as they are now without their movies.
Although the DC movies haven’t been released yet, their television shows are currently much more highly rated than those of Marvel. The “Arrow” and “The Flash” are completely dominating the television market with their fantastic stunts, story lines, and depth of characterization. Following that is another show in development known as “Legends of Tomorrow” which assembles characters from both aforementioned television series to form a sort of mini “Justice League”, but nonetheless, it has been garnering the attention of viewers across the globe as well as comic book readers. Marvel, so far, has been lagging behind with their “Agents of SHIELD” and “Agent Carter” shows; nevertheless, the Netflix adaptation of “Daredevil” is said to be the “best superhero TV show on air” because of its action sequences, performances, and darker tone compared to the rest of the Marvel Universe.
As of now, Marvel dominates the cinematic industry whereas DC rules the small screen with an iron fist, but with so many new movies and shows planned for the future, it is unsure where both franchises will be in few years time.
